Blaze damage closes school

A YATE school will be closed on Monday and Tuesday after it was badly damaged by a fire.

The blaze at St Mary's CofE Primary School on Church Road started at about 4.40am yesterday and caused extensive damage to the head teacher's office and smoke damage to the reception classes, ruining work done by four and five-year-olds who started school in September.

A Wendy house was burned down, a shelter badly damaged and many outdoor toys wrecked.

Avon Fire and Rescue service was called to two separate fires on the site, which is close to a fire station, and firefighters were there within four minutes of the 999 call, keeping damage to a minimum by tackling the fire from in and outside the building.

An investigation was taking place yesterday to discover the cause, although arson is suspected.

The school was closed yesterday and will stay shut on Monday and Tuesday.

A statement on the school website read: "We are very sad that all of our outdoor play equipment in the reception area including our Wendy house has gone and the shelter area damaged beyond repair.

"If you have any toys that you are able to donate whilst we wait for the insurance to go through we would really appreciate it."
