Crooks conned way into elderly woman's home and stole savings

THE family of a Clevedon pensioner who was robbed of her life savings by two "despicable" crooks have thanked friends and neighbours for their support.

Callous thieves tricked their way into the home of the 89-year-old last month and while one thief kept the pensioner talking, the other stole her life savings of £900.

A man knocked on the window of the pensioner's house at around 8.15pm on January 31 and told her he had just moved into a property at Conygar Close.

He asked the pensioner to look at her switches as his electricity had gone off.

The victim, who does not want to be named, opened the door to let him into her house and as she did, another man entered the property behind him.

The first man held the victim, who has lived in Clevedon for more than 50 years, back while his accomplice searched the property.

Then the pair made off with her savings.

The victim, although shocked and upset, was unhurt.

Her son-in-law Tony Fowler has thanked her neighbours and the police for their support following the incident.

Mr Fowler, 70, said: "Mum is a very trusting person and has lived in Clevedon for 55 years and has many friends.

"This whole incident has been very upsetting and has left her feeling nervous. It has left her and her neighbours feeling frightened of opening the door.

"However she is coping exceptionally well and her neighbours and friends have been fantastic and rallied around, sending her flowers and cards and making sure she is ok.

"The police have also been fantastic and have gone over and above the call of duty to make sure she is ok. I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who has helped mum through this difficult time.

"It is despicable that someone can behave like this and prey on an elderly person and take their life savings. I also hope this incident acts as some sort of warning to other people to be extra careful when opening the door to anyone."

Security at the pensioner's home has now been upgraded.

Police are investigating the incident and are appealing to anyone with information to contact them. It is believed the men may have tried calling on another address in the town.

Detective Inspector Julie Mackay said: "This was a despicable crime committed against a vulnerable, elderly lady while she was home alone.

"I would urge anyone who may have been approached by these men to come forward and I would urge all residents to remain vigilant and report the matter to us immediately."

Police would like to speak to two men who they think may be able to help with their inquiries.

The first is described as white around 5ft 7inches tall, in his early 20s and of slim build.

The second man is described as white, slightly taller in his 30s. Both spoke with accents.

Anyone who may know these men or who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in and around the Conygar Close area is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
